What You'll Need
A barbell and a bench or box that people won't mind you stepping on... And a bench or box that won't tilt when you step on it, because falling is never in the plan.
Why You Should Be Doing This Exercise
We care about you. We really enjoy exercises that feel mildly athletic, i.e. that require some other movement beyond up and down.This will work your quads, and if you play it right, your glutes too. This is a three star prospect that's about to have a break-out summer.
Start
Facing the bench or box you'll be stepping onto, place the bar on the back of your shoulders (aka your traps), and throw your hands out wide to secure it. Now, your starting position is an athletic position, again, facing the bench.
Middle
Place one foot on the bench or box and while standing up on it, follow with the other foot. The closer you start to the bench, the more your quads will be involved. The further away you are, the more your glutes will work for a living.
Finish
Alright, so you've managed to stand up on the bench or box. Now, let's get you down. Step down, not with the leg that stepped up, but with the one that followed. Once you've stepped down with that leg, and it's firmly on the ground, follow with the leg that led the initial step-up. Once both feet are on the ground, now step back up with the leg that initially followed the first step-up. Much less complicated than it sounds. You've got this, but take a look at the video for goodwill.
Key Don'ts
Don't even think about leaning your upper body forward when stepping up onto the bench or box. Not cool. And don't think about jumping down from the bench or box when both feet are on it. Equally uncool.
